Review of Equine Acute-Phase Proteins

Plasma concentrations of acute-phase proteins (APPs) increase during the acute-phase response to every process that leads to tissue damage (e.g., infections, trauma, surgery, and neoplasia). Measurements of APPs may be useful for diagnosing the presence of inflammation and tissue damage, prognostication, monitoring the effect of the therapy and the occurrence of post-operative complications or relapse, and monitoring herd health. APPs are potentially valuable adjuvants to clinical assessment of a patient.
